Letter from Lockroy (well almost) - October 2008
The season rapidly approaches. The cargo has all left the UK by a few different routes. Fram took what they could from Ireland with the bulk heading south via the Hurtigruten agents to meet the Fram in Ushuaia. We have had fantastic support from Hurtigruten, Linblad and Polar Star Expeditions to get our staff and equipment south to Port Lockroy. We have also had fantastic support from numerous different companies supplying items for Port Lockroy including Jeld-wen supplying a replacement window for Bransfield House; Tog 24 supplying our staff clothing; Eat Natural giving food bars;Edinburgh Woollen Mill supplying sheepskins for the staff to sleep on; Hunter stoves and Topstak supplying a new gas fire to keep the staff warm; Safety shop supplying some safety clothing and equipment; and Waitrose supplying food. So with this generous support we are all set for the season. Gerald Piper and his team at GRP haulage have once again being invaluable in getting our stores from the UK to their desired European destination. Sally Owen (Port Lockroy 0607 season) has sorted out all our Stanley requirements.
With all the new merchandise and kit we are all looking forward to an exciting season. Rick, Laura, Nikki and Judith left the UK at the end of the month to meet National Geographic Endeavour on its first trip south of the season. Above Nikki, Laura, and Rick enjoy a civilised meal in Ushuaia.
The next update will be from the staff at Port Lockroy in a few weeks time – ice and weather dependant!
