The British Graham Land Expedition has, until now, remained a little-known scientific venture; quite possibly because of its enormous success. Scientific objectives were achieved; members of the team cooperated and worked well together and at the end of almost three years on the Antarctic Peninsula all men returned home alive. The story of the BGLE is therefore one of the most inspiring and uplifting accounts of Antarctic endeavour. And yet it is a great deal more. It was the last expedition of the heroic era but the first to combine modern technologies with traditional polar methods developed in the Arctic. It also marked a paradigm shift in models for Antarctic operations, developing expertise with aircraft, dog-teams and polar field work which provided a blueprint for Antarctic exploration into the modern age. Led by John Rymill, the BGLE was hailed on its return by the American Geographical Society as providing ‘probably the largest contribution to accurate detailed surveys of the Antarctic continent by any expedition’; Sir George Bishop, President of the Royal Geographical Society from 1983-87 described it as ‘the very model of what an expedition should be’. This wonderful account of the BGLE’s long and invaluable scientific venture will be treasured by anyone with an interest in the Polar world.

Coming twenty-five years after its last publication, this edition contains more than eighty original black and white photographs which provide an atmospheric illustration to Rymill’s official account.  Southern Lights is undoubtedly an essential and valuable addition to any library or Polar collection.
