About The trust

Inspired by need to recognise and conserve Britain’s long and distinguished history of exploration and scientific research, the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust was set up as a charity in 1993.

  • help conserve selected early British scientific bases on the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia region for the enjoyment and education of visitors. The UKAHT operates Port Lockroy, which is designated Historic Site and Monument (No. 61) under the Antarctic Treaty;
  • support the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust in conserving the historic huts in the Ross Sea area built by the explorers Scott, Shackleton and Borchgrevink;
  • promote an educational programme to stimulate public interest in science, the global environment and Antarctic research through the inspiration of earlier British Antarctic endeavours;
  • help with the acquisition and preservation of British historical Antarctic artefacts.The Trust's PAtron, HRH The Princess Royal at Port Lockroy. Photo credit LAPHOT Kelly Whybrow HMS ENDURANCE

The Trust's Patron is HRH The Princess Royal and its Vice Patrons are Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Charles Swithinbank. The Trust is managed by Trustees drawn from the ranks of those with Antarctic expertise and/or are enthusiasts for the region.
